Goldenseal exerts broad-spectrum anti-bacterial activity against many potentially harmful bacteria. This is due to its high content of alkaloids - berberine, hydrastine and palmatine. It is utilised in conditions of yeast overgrowth such as Candida albicans due to its anti-fungal activity. Goldenseal has also been shown to exert anti-parasitic activity against many parasites. These three broad properties warrants Goldenseal serious consideration where the growth of pathogenic organisms is as issue. Goldenseal is probably one of the best herbs to choose for bacterial infections of any kind.
